Time is flying by and now it’s only 17 days until Christmas! Many of us are getting things ready around the house from decorating, stocking up lots of great food and shopping for gifts. It can be a very busy time of year for many as they get ready for the big day. As we prepare for the holiday season keep these safety tips from the US Fire Administration https://www.usfa.fema.gov/prevention/home-fires/prevent-fires/holiday/ in mind:
Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry tree will burn very hot and very fast.
Inspect your Christmas lights before you hang them up. Throw away any strands with pinched or frayed wires. Electrical shorts are a common cause of home fires.
Keep your tree a minimum of 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, wood stoves, heating vents and radiators. This reduces the risk of it drying out too quickly.
Get rid of your Christmas tree after Christmas or as soon as it dries out. Dried out trees are a fire waiting to happen.
If you have real candles keep them at least 1 foot away from anything that can burn. Make sure they are in stable holders and cannot be easily knocked over.
The members of the Mt. Penn Fire Company hope all of you have a safe and pleasant holiday season. STAY SAFE!
