It’s Fire Prevention week again and the theme is all about safe charging of your battery devices. There has been a significant increase in fires resulting from these devices being charged over the past few years. Once on fire batteries go into “thermal runaway” and burn and they do so at 400 to 1800 fahrenheit which is more than enough to ignite surrounding materials. Here are a few charging tips from the NFPA:
Don’t take a chance with a cheap charger
Always charge devices on a hard surface and not on the arm of your sofa or recliner.
Unplug once full charge is reached.
Items like e-bikes, scooters and power tools should be charged outside when possible.
If your device feels very hot, smells strange, smokes or starts to swell up and make funny noises stop using it and get it outside.
