Community Events

We hope everybody enjoyed their long holiday weekend and the wonderful, fall like weather we experienced.  There are two upcoming events this week that are of interest to the community and we hope you are able to attend.

The first, on Saturday September 10th is the second annual Reading 120 bike race.  The race will begin in City Park and wind it’s way through Mt. Penn and Lower Alsace before continuing into rural areas and then finishing up back in our area.  There will be several temporary road closures as well as all day closures.  Please be alert for signs, barriers and the numerous police, fire and other volunteers who will be assisting with this race.  Follow their directions and detours in order that everybody is able to have a safe and enjoyable day.  You can find out more about the race at http://www.reading120.com/2016/

The second event will be held Sunday, September 11th at the Antietam Valley Rec Center on Byram St.  The local churches, Pennside Presbyterian, Trinity United Church of Christ, Faith Lutheran Church and Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church have partnered together in order to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks on the United States and the lives of those lost on 9/11 and to celebrate the extraordinary and selfless First Responders of the Antietam Valley who include Central Berks Regional Police, Mount Penn Volunteer Fire Company, Lower Alsace Township Fire Department and Lower Alsace Ambulance.  There will be a non-denominational service beginning at 10a.m. followed by a special presentation of the Hamilton Celtic Pipes & Drums.  Come out and show your support as well as remembering those who were lost that terrible day 15 years ago.  Further information may be found at http://antietamvalley.org/911-community-first-responder-recognition-ceremony/
