Mt. Penn Fire Company

MEMORIAL DAY!

It’s hard to believe May is just about done! Not a whole lot has been going on at Mt. Penn. We have been taking care of the typical day to day calls like fire alarms, some crashes and a few others thrown in. We also did training burns last night at the fire training site to refine our skills.

Of course this weekend is Memorial Day so that means a long weekend and the unofficial start of summer for most of us. There will be parades, cookouts and pool openings and it looks like the weather will cooperate.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970. Since 1971 it has been observed on the last Monday in May. Although an extra day off for many of us, it is a day to honor those in our armed forces who have fallen in the service of our country. If it were not for their sacrifice we would not be able to enjoy all of the freedoms we have today in America. When they signed up they wrote a blank check to this country for an amount up to and including their lives. So please, take some time during your activities this weekend to remember them and what their sacrifice meant for all of us.
