On November 30 just before 1:30p.m. Mt. Penn was dispatched as the RIT company for a reported structure fire at Super Duper Seafood, 8472 Allentown Pike in Maidencreek Township. Berks County Communications advised of a call from an employee stating fire in the basement as well as a call indicating a fire alarm from the location. Initially arriving companies from Co 12 (Blandon), 32 (Walnuttown) and 11 (Temple) encountered heavy smoke on the approach and quickly made it a working fire. Locating the fire was difficult due to the heavy smoke and maze like partitions constructed in the building. Once found, it was quickly contained to the northwest corner of the basement. Venting the structure proved difficult because of the construction and cool and humid weather. At least 6 fans were in service at one point. The Mt. Penn crew was used as RIT until the fire was under control at which time command released them to the manpower pool where they were used to complete extinguishment and assist in ventilation efforts. Crews were able to go available shortly before 4p.m. The fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal as to the exact cause.
