Commercial Compactor Fire in St. Lawrence

MtPennExeter

On August 2nd just after 10:30p.m. and not long after crews had returned from National Night Out activities, Engine 1 was dispatched to assist Exeter (Co25) for a report of a compactor on fire at Goodwill Industries, 3001 St. Lawrence Ave.  When E1 arrived they reported a working fire in the compactor/dumpster which was attached to the building.  Deputy 25-2 (Chamberlain) upgraded the call to a structure fire assignment which brought Lower Alsace (Co4), Ladder 1 from Mt. Penn and an engine and medic unit from the City of Reading.  Crews placed one line in service inside the warehouse area to prevent the fire from spreading while another line was readied as the dumpster was being pulled away from the building by a forklift so access could be made.  Crews also connected a supply line to the sprinkler system in the event it would be needed.  The fire was quickly extinguished and quite a bit of work was needed to do overhaul on the large amount of trash and debris.  Several exhaust fans were placed in the warehouse area to remove the moderate smoke condition.  All units were able to clear shortly after midnight.
