Busy Columbus Day for Mt. Penn

Columbus Day turned out to be busy for the Mt. Penn crew.  It started with a possible structure fire in Amity Township in the vicinity of 551 Old Swede Rd. which turned out to be a normal condition from a manufacturing plant.  There have been numerous calls to this location in the past and crews were shortly recalled by the officer in charge.

At about 3:20pm the Spill Response trailer was requested to the 6800 block of Boyertown Pike (Route 562) in Amity to assist Company 49 and 6 for a vehicle crash with a large amount of diesel fuel down.  A garbage truck had lost control and struck a low bridge abutment as well as a parked vehicle and some trees which caused the fuel tank to rupture and detach from the truck. The truck struck several trees before finally coming to rest several feet in the air.  Crews were on the scene for about 2 hours to assist in controlling the fuel spill and prevent any further damage.

About 5:15pm the rescue was dispatched to Carsonia Ave. & Heidelberg Ave. in Lower Alsace to assist Company 4 with a two vehicle head on crash with several injuries which fortunately turned out to be generally minor in nature.  The rescue returned to station within 15 minutes.

Finally at about 6:40pm the engine and ladder were sent to 322 Parkview Rd. in St. Lawrence to assist Company 25 on a reported structure fire.  Arriving units found a small fire in the oven and smoke throughout the residence.  The fire was contained quickly and crews used exhaust fans to clear the smoke before turning the home back over to the owners within 30 minutes.
