On June 28th just before 9p.m. Mt. Penn and Lower Alsace (Co 4) were dispatched to 2437 Fairview Ave. in the boro for a reported natural gas leak. As the engine and rescue were arriving the odor of gas was evident from almost a block away on this warm and humid night. Engine 4 stood by at the nearest hydrant while crews stretched a line as a precaution while they investigated. The gas was secured at the outside meter as other crews entered the involved house as well as the neighboring house at 2439 in order to check the buildings using a gas meter. High levels were noted at the initial address with somewhat lower levels next door. Windows in both were opened and exhaust fans placed to aid in ventilation after which both houses were metered again with negative results. The exact cause of the leak is unknown and the properties were turned over to their respective owners and UGI for further investigation.
