Mt. Penn Fire Company

Jump start to April

On April 2 at 9:45a.m. the engine was dispatched to assist the City of Reading on a second alarm structure fire in the 200 block of S. 11th St., Box 602.  Arriving units had a 4 story vacant warehouse at 213 S. 11th St. with heavy fire on the top floor of the former Letisse Handbags/L&B Metals building. Command reported exterior operations only due to the building conditions.  E1 got a hydrant at Spruce St. & Wunder St. and used two lines to supply Tower 25 (Exeter) on Wunder St.  The rest of the crew from the engine was used to stretch a line from RFD Engine 3 on Wunder St, through the bakers alley to a rear yard where they set up a master stream device to knock down fire on that side of the building.  Mt. Penn crews were able to break down operations and return to station at 3:30p.m.

While this was taking place the ladder was dispatched along with Engine 64(West Reading) for a fire alarm at the Doubletree Hotel, 701 Penn St.  This turned out to be a false activation due to the heavy smoke from the 11th St. fire and Reading Car 3 (Kemery) recalled the assignment.

L1 was only back at station for a few minutes when the 3rd alarm was struck for the fire in the city.  The ladder, along with Tower 79 (Wyomissing) staged at 10th & Chestnut until released within an hour by city Car 1 (Stoudt) as there were sufficient master streams in service as well as no easy access for placement of additional trucks.

Shortly after 12:15p.m. Mt. Penn was dispatched to assist Lower Alsace (Co4) and Lower Alsace EMS (Squad 555) for a cardiac arrest in the 600 block of N. 25th St.  Units found an male unresponsive due to a drug overdose and were able to revive him.  Crews assisted EMS with patient care and packaging in order to transport him to the hospital.

Just before 3p.m. the ladder was dispatched to assist Lower Alsace (Co4) for an unknown fire in the 000 block of Old Friedensburg Rd.  FM23 (Gerhart) arrived first and confirmed an illegal controlled burn.  He had the resident extinguish the fire and recalled the assignment.

Just after 6p.m. Mt. Penn and Lower Alsace (Co4) were dispatched to the 2400 block of Cumberland Ave. in the Boro for a burning odor called in by a nearby resident.  Captain 1 (Kline) held the assignment at station while he walked the neighborhood and then recalled it as it was determined to be the  smoke from the fire on S. 11th St. that was hanging over town and causing the smell.
