On February 12 just after 9p.m. L1 was dispatched as RIT to assist Birdsboro with a reported structure fire, dryer on fire in the basement at 712 E. 2nd St. The police had arrived first and confirmed smoke showing from the residence. When Chief 7 (Kulp) and the first units from Birdsboro arrived they quickly confirmed a working fire in the basement with smoke on all 3 floors. Once L1 arrived they were put to work immediately with a second company dispatched to handle RIT duties. The crew was split with some taking care of ventilation duties and the others sent to assist the hose crews in the basement area. The fire had extended from the dryer to the structure itself as well as other items stored in the basement, producing heavy fire in the basement which burned away the basement steps and also sent smoke into the adjoining residence at 710. Several lines were pulled to extinguish the fire with extensive overhaul required. Fans were used to help in clearing the smoke from both buildings once the fire was under control. Mt. Penn returned to station shortly after 11:30p.m.
