Structure fire in Mt. Penn

On September 17th shortly before 4:45p.m. Mt. Penn was dispatched, along with Lower Alsace (Co4), Exeter (Co25), Reading City, Birdsboro (Co7) and Oley (Co5), for a reported structure fire in the area of Perkiomen Ave. and 27th St.  Nothing was found at that location and Lt 1 (Lombardo) reported a column of smoke visible in the area of 24th St. as he was responding.  Deputy 1 (Wertz) was able to confirm a working fire on N. 24th St. just off Perkiomen Ave. so all apparatus was re-directed to respond there.  Crews had a 1 story, 3 bay garage with heavy fire showing with possible extension to the nearby house.  Two lines were pulled to control the fire while other crews made entry to check the house.  Although there was damage to the exterior siding and roof of the house no extension was found on the inside.  The garage and its contents look to be a total loss.  Crews were able to clear about 6p.m. The exact cause of this fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal but is believed to be accidental.
