On January 18th just after 8:30a.m. Mt. Penn and Lower Alsace(Co4) were dispatched to the Dollar Tree on Perkiomen Ave. for a reported trash truck on fire with multiple calls being received. Arriving units found a large pile of trash burning in the parking lot between Dollar Tree and Antietam Academy where the quick thinking driver had dumped it when he realized it was on fire. His quick action prevented more serious damage to his truck. One line was initially pulled but it was soon discovered that the dumpster that had just been emptied by the truck was also on fire, and being fairly close to the building the line was moved to extinguish it. A second line was then utilized (by the Deputy Chief according to witnesses) to finish extinguishment on the pile of trash in the parking lot. The fire was placed under control within 5 minutes and crews spent the next 20 minutes performing overhaul to ensure everything was out. Fortunately damage to the dumpster and trash truck was minimal and the trash company sent out a crew to clean everything up. The Fire Marshal determined this fire was caused by a discarded scooter with lithium ion batteries that had been improperly disposed of in the dumpster.
